zukka

De-Googled Android · GrapheneOS · LineageOS · /e/OS

No Google services. No SIM card. No local database.

If you went to the trouble of removing Google from your phone, your messenger shouldn't force you to register with a SIM card, rely on Firebase for push notifications, or leave a SQLite archive of every conversation sitting on internal storage.

Native operation without Google Mobile Services (GMS)

The direct zukka APK runs on GrapheneOS, /e/OS, LineageOS, DivestOS and CalyxOS with zero Google Play Services installed — not even sandboxed Play Services are needed. Where Google normally handles push wakeups via Firebase (FCM), zukka keeps its own encrypted connection alive directly.

Zero phone number or Wi-Fi-only devices

Run zukka on a Wi-Fi-only Pixel tablet or a de-Googled phone with no SIM card at all. Sign-up asks only for a non-searchable nickname, a master password and your encryption phrase.

Complements GrapheneOS profiles

Android secondary user profiles and Private Space are visible in system settings if an inspector knows where to look. zukka's multi-account PINs live inside a single app install — different PINs open different accounts with zero OS-level profile indicators.

Pay with Bitcoin or crypto

De-Googled users cannot use Google Play Billing — and shouldn't have to. Subscriptions can be paid outside Google Play via Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, card or bank wire.

Honest engineering details

How zukka works on a phone without Google — and the battery trade-off.

Persistent encrypted channel instead of FCM On standard Android, Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging wakes apps up when a message arrives, letting Google's servers see when and how often your device receives notifications. On a phone without GMS, zukka maintains its own lightweight encrypted connection in the background so messages and voice/video calls arrive in real time. The honest trade-off: slightly higher battery usage from keeping that connection alive. Granting "Unrestricted" battery usage in Android settings keeps delivery instant.
Why direct APK beats store builds for high-risk users The direct APK available on zukka.app/us/download/ is signed with our release key, published with its SHA-256 fingerprint, and receives automatic in-app update notifications without touching Google Play.
